A very clear example is found in the Korean peninsula. In South Korea, the entire country is filled with lights. Move up to North Korea, and there are almost no lights. In China, the east is clearly lit. You can say this region is more developed because it has access to the rivers and to the sea. In the left part of China, there are far less lights because of less development. Geographically, it would be hard to develop this area because of low access and more mountainous regions. The same might be said of the United States. Both the West Side and a large part of the East Side are very well lit. Incidentally, they are highly developed also because of access to the sea, major rivers and lakes. But somewhere in the West side, there are fewer lights because that area is largely desert land. So you would expect less lighting.

Some astronauts actually say it is prettier that way. Not only do the lights look like sparkling diamonds. They also show how far we’ve progressed as a human race.
